Summary

Our overall research vision is the creation, dissemination and curation of world leading knowledge in Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences. Our research is organized under 4 themes:  human performance science, physical activity for health, physical education and sport.

We have 35 members of staff who are active researchers. From the REF 2014 results we were ranked 1st in Scotland and 10th in the UK. We engage in division-crossing, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues across the School and University, and in other institutions within Scotland and internationally.

Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PAHRC)

PAHRC aims to provide evidence of how to encourage people of all ages to ‘sit less and walk more’. Increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary time are major public health goals.

PAHRC's team vision is to become an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field of physical activity for health. We seek to create an active research environment that will inform teaching (particularly the new MSc in Physical Activity for Health) and knowledge exchange in related areas.

Edinburgh Social and Political Sports Research Forum

For nearly six centuries, University of Edinburgh students and staff have been extending the boundaries of knowledge and providing answers to some of the world’s most important questions. The task ahead involves a fourfold exercise a sound grasp of evidence, analysis, the development of communities of best practice and a commitment to social change and intervention.
