Explorations in Ethnography, Language and Communication is the biannual conference of the Linguistic Ethnography Forum (LEF), a special interest group of the British Association for Applied Linguistics.

The conference was inspired by a research training programme run at King’s College London and the Institute of Education. Three participants decided to establish an event that would offer further opportunities to exchange knowledge around ethnography, language and communication.

Aims

EELC conferences aim to:

  • Provide a dedicated cross-disciplinary forum for researchers who combine ethnographic and linguistic approaches,
  • Facilitate high quality debate on contemporary issues across health, education, social policy and cultural studies,
  • Establish a stimulating programme combining plenary lectures, data workshops, oral and poster presentations,
  • Facilitate international dialogue between Linguistic Ethnography in Europe and US linguistic anthropology.

Theme of EELC 2018

‘Linguistic Ethnography in a changing world’

The seventh conference takes place in a period of global uncertainty, and the conference theme asks how linguistic ethnography might contribute to the debate.

Ways to participate

We are inviting proposals for papers (20 mins plus 10 mins for questions) and colloquia. In the place of posters we are organising two half-day workshop sessions:

  • Digital ethnography workshop (led by Rodney Jones)
  • Multimodal interaction (led by Jeff Bezemer)

Each workshop will feature a smaller number of papers to allow space for a longer discussion, facilitated by the workshop leader. Please indicate on your registration form if you would your paper to be considered for a workshop.
