Improving young people’s knowledge of student finance: NEW guide launched (11.9.2015)

Student Finance Guide

The guide was developed by Sarah Minty, Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, as part of a partnership project alongside Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), NUS Scotland, Lothians Equal Access Programme for Schools (LEAPS) and Gateway Shared Services. The project was funded by an ESRC Impact Accelerator Award, administered through the University of Edinburgh, and builds upon work undertaken as part of an ESRC Fellowship project which explored young people’s plans for the future and their views of higher education in Scotland.

Sarah presented findings from her interviews with young people, focusing on their levels of confusion regarding financial support available for HE in Scotland and the issue of debt aversion among those from less advantaged backgrounds. She was joined by colleagues from SAAS, NUS Scotland, LEAPS and Gateway to discuss their involvement in the project and to consider how knowledge and understanding can be improved for young people and their parents.

The event was well attended by secondary teachers, student recruitment officers, widening participation practitioners, parent group representatives and policy makers. A limited number of printed copies of the guide are available from sarah.minty@ed.ac.uk, which can be viewed and downloaded at: http://bit.ly/student-finance-guide.

Aimed at 16 to 19 year olds (or their parents/ teachers) in Scotland considering studying HNC/Ds at college or degree courses at university, it provides an overview of the key aspects of student finance to ensure students have all the facts before they apply for higher education.
