Inclusive Digital Technology Course
This blended online learning course benefits participants with practical, face-to-face workshops as well as online teaching and learning that help participants learn about the developments and arguments surrounding inclusive technology and pedagogy.
The Inclusive Digital Technology (IDT) Professional Learning course is noteworthy for its uniqueness in the field of assistive technology in Scotland. The course is set within a context of underpinning academic literacies, legislation and policy at national and local levels in relation to inclusive digital technologies and resources for pupils with additional support needs (ASN). Although the policy details are aimed at people working in the Scottish education system, the course will still be of benefit to those working in other countries. Inclusive Digital Technology (IDT) is used as an umbrella term to include a range of assistive technologies and resources to support pupils with additional support needs (ASN) including:
- Learners with literacy and numeracy difficulties, e.g., dyslexia and dyscalculia.
- Learners who experience sensory difficulties, e.g. sight loss, visually impaired, blind and/or hearing impaired.
- Learners with communication difficulties.
- Learners with complex needs.
The Design of the Course
Sessions have been designed to enable you to learn about the developments and arguments surrounding inclusive technology and pedagogy and to examine the current evidence base that informs the relationship between them within different contexts such as school, local and national initiatives, policy, legislation and the attainment gap.
This course is not about learning to use inclusive digital technologies! There is an expectation you will have some knowledge and experience of using different assistive technologies and resources in the classroom to support pupils. However, relevant support will be available during the practical workshop, as well as the inclusive digital technology section and discussion board.
This course is a professional learning course which is non-credit-bearing. Participants who participate fully in the face-to-face and online sessions will receive a certificate of attendance, and participants who fully participate and complete the assignment (a small-scale case study) will receive a certificate of completion. If participants subsequently matriculate as a University of Edinburgh student on the MSc Inclusive Education programme, they may be able to earn accreditation of prior learning (APL) credit.
As a participant you will:
- Examine key academic literacies in relation to pupils with ASN.
- Consider relevant legislation and policy which impact on your practice.
- Consider a range of issues which impact on raising pupil attainment.
- Explore, identify and implement relevant and appropriate inclusive digital technologies and resources to support a pupil with ASN.
- Critically review your experiences by submitting a case study - in a multi-modal format of your choice.
Who is the course for?
Teachers in primary and secondary school settings as well as educators in Further Education institutions or other settings who have a keen interest in learning about inclusive technology and pedagogy.
This course includes two workshops on Saturdays (three hours each) followed by online learning and self-study of roughly ten hours per week. It is hoped that participants will be able to attend these workshops, however online materials and Adobe Connect can be used for those who are unable to attend.
Week 1 (practical workshop on Saturday 25 January 2020 at CALL Scotland): Introduction to Inclusive Digital Technologies
Week 2 (practical workshop on Saturday 1 February 2020 at CALL Scotland): Parallel assistive technology workshops
Week 3 (online during the week beginning Monday 3 February 2020): CALL Staff intro and overview of Learn (1-hour tutorial) + self-study/class discussion boards. Study subject – inclusive education
Week 4 (online during the week beginning Monday 10 February 2020): Self-study. Class discussion boards (opportunity to discuss/commence assignment). Study subject – universal design for learning
Week 5 (online during the week beginning Monday 17 February 2020): Self-study / class discussion boards. Study subject – legislation and policy
Week 6 (online during the week beginning Monday 24 February 2020): Self-study / class discussion boards. Study subject – assessment models
Week 7 (online during the week beginning Monday 2 March 2020): Self-study + formative assessment support (1 hour). Study subject – inclusive digital technologies
Week 8 (online during the week beginning Monday 9 March 2020): Self-study + formative assessment support (1 hour). Study subject – inclusive digital technologies
Week 9 (online during the week beginning Monday 16 March 2020): Self-study
Week 10 (online during the week beginning Monday 23 March 2020): Self-study + assignment submission*. Includes e-Poster submission (15-minute poster presentation to tutors/class group via webinar).
