For over 40 years the Outdoor Education section of the University of Edinburgh has been at the international forefront of providing postgraduate degrees in all aspects of outdoor education.
An Outdoor Education programme has been conducted in its present or similar form for over 40 years at the University and the programme has an international reputation for its academic and professional quality. The Postgraduate Diploma has provided conceptual and practical training for many of those now influential in the profession, while the Master's degree is unique in Europe and one of a few in the world.
Visit the University’s Degree Finder for indicative entry requirements, fees, international grade equivalency, and language requirements.
There are three possible exit levels: Certificate, Diploma, or Masters. The emphasis – at every level – is on developing the knowledge, understanding, and judgement necessary to facilitate meaningful learning in, for, and through the outdoors.
Students range from young adults who have recently completed undergraduate degrees to professionals returning to study after years, and in some cases even decades, working in the field.
Graduates are employed world-wide in all aspects of the Outdoor Education sector, such as in residential outdoor education centres, wilderness expeditions, and school, college and university outdoor education programmes.
