Deaf Learners
This specialist pathway is designed for teachers who wish to gain the competencies for qualified teachers of deaf children.
Teachers who are currently teaching deaf children mainly in Scottish schools, can earn a Postgraduate Diploma and gain the competencies agreed by the Scottish Government for qualified teachers of deaf children.
The British Association of Teachers of the Deaf has endorsed this award and supports the way it acts as a professional qualification.
Pathway structure
A Postgraduate Diploma is made up of 120 credits. To earn a Postgraduate Diploma with this specialism, you will take the following compulsory and option courses:
Compulsory courses
- Audiology and Audiometry (20 credits)
- Deaf Studies (10 credits)
- Language and Communication (20 credits)
- Promoting Achievement and Curriculum Access for Deaf Learners (20 credits)
- Internal placement with deaf children / young people (10 credits)
- External placement with deaf children / young people (10 credits)
- Sources of Knowledge (10 credits)
Option courses
Students will take an additional 20 credits of option courses. Option courses change every year but have previously included:
- Inclusive Pedagogy (20 credits)
- Education for All (20 credits)
- Collaborative Working in Children's Services (20 credits)
- Teachers as Agents of Change (20 credits)
