Moray House School of Education and Sport has been making a major contribution and impact to the field of education both in Scotland and worldwide for almost 200 years. In that time, our staff, students and alumni have influenced, improved and transformed learning and teaching and wider educational policy in the UK and beyond. Today, we continue to conduct research across all aspects of education and learning – from pre-school to higher education and lifelong learning. Our alumni include world-famous novelist JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, and Great Britain’s most successful Olympic athlete, cyclist Sir Chris Hoy MBE.
Moray House School of Education is the leading School of Education in Scotland – we are ranked first for both educational research and sport and exercise research, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF also places us in the top five in the UK for educational research and top 10 in the UK for sport and exercise research, confirming our reputation as a UK centre of excellence in these fields.
The School’s five research clusters: Equality, social justice and inclusion; Pedagogy, learning and curriculum; Language, culture and communication; Digital education; Sport, physical education and health science supplement the work of research centres and groups and are aimed at fostering emergent areas of research excellence.

Theory-informed applied research
Staff are internationally renowned for their theory-informed applied research and for the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the professions of teaching, education leadership, community education, outdoor education, sport and recreation management and sport and exercise science.
The Moray House submission of 89 staff to the Education Panel of the most recent UK Government Research Assessment Exercise received the largest award for education research in Scotland and the second largest in the UK.
Our sports science provision is ranked 1st in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2017, we are the UK’s largest provider of initial teacher education in Physical Education and we have the best sports facilities and team performance of any Scottish university.
The School of Education also houses one of the largest groupings of research students in education and sports-related studies. We are committed to developing research-led teaching within a culture that values contributions to wider sustainable and socially responsible development in Scotland, the UK and globally and which promotes education, health, economic, environmental, social and cultural wellbeing.
