Abstract

This seminar explores how engaging in playing by ear from recordings (alone and in groups) contributes to the development of musical autonomy in learners within formal and non-formal music education settings.

Lucy Green’s work (2002, 2008) on informal learning and non-formal teaching will be used as a lens through which to examine and discuss two music programmes – the first on one to one instrumental teaching and learning and the second in Higher Education.

These programmes illustrate how playing by ear from recordings can foster enjoyment in music making, creativity, the development of a wide range of musical skills and the music learners’ autonomy and confidence in playing alone or with others.
