Dr Christian Weikop, Lara Day and Lara Demori hosted a participatory discussion on Anselm Kiefer on 5 May 2014 at 6.30pm at the Fruitmarket Gallery.
Dr Christian Weikop, Chancellor's Fellow in History of Art at ECA, is a specialist in modern and contemporary German art and has published and lectured internationally in this field.
He has worked extensively on Expressionism and Dada, most recently on a project concerning the British reception of modern German art for the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery in Leicester, and is currently in the early stages of preparing a Royal Academy exhibition entitled Expressionism: The Cult of Youth.
Christian also works in a post-1945 field, especially with respect to the German artists in ARTIST ROOMS as part of a research partnership with Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland, as well as independently with the Royal Academy, London.
He has directed an Anselm Kiefer online In Focus project for the ARTIST ROOMS partnership, and recently interviewed both Kiefer and Georg Baselitz for the RA. The interview with Kiefer took place at his studio complex outside of Paris, and was in preparation for his essay for the catalogue of a major RA Kiefer retrospective that opens in September 2014.
Lara Day completed her doctoral dissertation based jointly in the departments of art and architectural history (ECA) and history (HCA) in spring 2014.
It examines the writer and architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg and his contributions to the discourses of art and architecture, cultural criticism, nationalism and race, from the Wilhelmine to the National Socialist period.
She has written on such artists as Ernst Barlach, August Sander, Richard Long and Anselm Kiefer, and is currently finishing the edited volume The Persistence of Race in German History. Re-examining Constructions and Perceptions of Cultural Narratives of Race in the Wilhelmine Empire, the Weimar Republic and under National Socialism for Berghahn Books.
Lara Demori is a second-year PhD candidate in History of Art. Her research project focuses on Neo-avantgardes in Italy and Brazil, particularly on the work of Piero Manzoni and Hélio Oiticica.
