This workshop event is organised by Jan Grobovsek and sponsored by the grant “Misallocation, Agriculture, and Aggregate Productivity – The Role of Insecure Land Rights and Missing Financial Markets.” The workshop will consist of presentations by leading researchers in the areas of micro and macro development investigating the nexus between agricultural productivity and rural-urban migration in developing countries. European Winter Meeting of the Econometric Society - 10 & 11 December 2016 |

For more than fifty years, the European Winter Meetings have fostered interaction among a small group of young scholars, who presented their work by invitation, and a group of senior academics representing different regions and fields of specialisation. Many of today’s leading European economists kick-started their careers at one of these meetings. At the turn of the century, the meetings began to focus on PhD students close to finishing their thesis. We can now confirm that the third meeting will be held at the University of Edinburgh, on December 10 & 11, 2016 Check the website for forthcoming announcements.

MacCaLM Annual Conference - 21 June 2016 |

The next annual conference of the MacCaLM project will be held in Edinburgh on 21 June, 2016. From the 13th to the 24th June, MacCaLM International Co-Investigators will begin arriving in Edinburgh to meet, discuss and attend seminars on the main project themes. These discussions will continue to inform the work of the project and the following year’s research. The project team will be joined by a number of invited guests for their annual conference on the 21st June when the discussions can be broadened and the project work shared with a wider audience. Scottish Workshop in Development Economics - 26 May 2016 |

The one-day workshop, hosted by the School, brought together faculty and graduate students doing research on development topics in Scotland. Speakers included Tim Worrall (Edinburgh), Liang Bai (Edinburgh), Arjunan Subramanian (Glasgow), Catherine Porter (Heriot-Watt), Ramses Abul Naga (Aberdeen), Alma Sobrevilla (Glasgow), and Jan Grobovsek (Edinburgh). The goal of the workshop is to serve as a forum for discussing works-in-progress, as well as knowledge exchange and mentoring of students. |

The School held a workshop "Economics and Gender" on Tuesday 8 March. The main purpose of the event was twofold. First of all the workshop offered an opportunity to showcase the gender-themed research produced by our own faculty and PhD students. And secondly, the workshop gathered feedback and suggestions regarding keynote speakers for a major conference planned in June 2017. |

Field Days workshop, 11 & 12 September 2015 |

SIRE and the University of Edinburgh School of Economics hosted the fourth Field Days workshop on the 11th and 12th of September 2015. This was a two-day international workshop on field experiments in the area of labour, health and development. The series was begun by the German Institute for Economic Research, Berlin in 2011 and gathers high profile researchers involved in field experimental research across the world. The workshop aimed to increase the exposure to field experimental research, exchange knowledge between Scottish and international researchers and engage with the wider public and policy makers. Confirmed speakers were Steffan Altman, Erwin Bulte, Simon Burgess, Robert Dur, David Huffmann, Jessica Leight, Joe Price, Michael Sanders, Luca Savorelli, Frank Shilbach and Tanya Rosenblat. The workshop was organised by Prof. Michèle Belot and Dr. Liang Bai. |

Country Size and Border Effects in a Globalised World Workshop - 2014 |

This workshop, supported by SIRE and the School of Economics, brought together researchers in the fields of International Economics, Macroeconomics and Political Economy to discuss recent empirical and theoretical work on the economics of country size and new borders. Keynote lectures will be delivered by Prof. James Anderson (Boston College and NBER) and Prof. Enrico Spolaore (Tufts University and NBER). Keynote Lecture 1: JAMES E. ANDERSON (Boston College) – "Border Effects: Canada-US Lessons" Keynote Lecture 2: ENRICO SPOLAORE (Tufts University) – “The Political Economy of National Borders”# Panel Discussion “The Economics of New Borders: Implications for Scotland”The School of Economics at the University of Edinburgh, together with the Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE) hosted a public panel discussion on the economics of new borders. The aim of the event was to showcase what methods economists use to evaluate the possible costs and benefits of independence, discuss the experience of other countries and explore the implications for Scotland. |

Search and Matching 2014 Conference |

REStud annual meeting 9-10 May 2013 |

The Review of Economic Studies Meetings have been held annually in May since 1989. Every year, in line with the Review’s tradition of encouraging the work of young economists, seven of the most promising graduating doctoral students in economics and finance in the world are selected to present their research to audiences in Europe. This year, for the first time, the UK visit of the tour was held in Edinburgh on the 9th and 10th of May 2013. The conference was supported by SIRE. Standard seminar presentations were given over two days to audiences invited by the local hosts and which include members of the journal’s editorial board. |

The Determinants of Dietary Choices – Approaches from different disciplines - 2013 |

The School hosted a major conference on Friday the 22nd and Saturday the 23rd of March 2013. A dozen of UK researchers from different disciplines introduced their "discipline-specific" approach to the study of dietary choices (targeted at a general academic audience) and presented an overview of their relevant research findings. SIRE BIC conference - 2012 |

The SIRE BIC ‘Theory’ conference was held on Saturday 6 October 2012 at the University of Edinburgh. Guest speakers included Klaus Schmidt (Munich) and Olivier Compte (PSE) with additional contributions by S. Sánchez-Pagés (U. Barcelona/UoE), M. Costa-Gomes (Aberdeen), M. Mueller-Frank (Oxford), N. Vikander (UoE), G. Gerasimou (St. Andrews) and P. Kircher (UoE). The closing remarks were offered by John Moore. All papers are now available from the conference website. |
