School of Economics

Entry requirements

To be accepted onto the PhD programme you will need a Distinction or near Distinction at masters level in economics or equivalent. If applicable you must be able to meet the minimum English language requirements.

For the PhD programme, it is essential that you have thorough grounding in the concepts and approaches necessary for research at this level.

To enter our PhD you need to have the equivalent of a Distinction (roughly similar to an A) in an MSc Economics degree similar to the SGPE MSc, and your research interest should be similar to our own.

If you do not have a MSc in economics, or you have a MSc in another subject such as business or finance, you will not normally be admitted directly to our PhD programme. In this case we recommend you consider applying to our MSc programmes.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to meet the minimum English language requirements as outlined by the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

You will also need to provide documentation of your English language qualifications but you do not have to do this when submitting your application. We will request this when we decide to make you an offer.

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences provides guidelines on how your certificates and scores are verified.
