Annual Undergraduate Ceilidh

On the 24th of October Teviot’s Debating Hall was host to this year’s Undergraduate Ceilidh, an annual tradition jointly organised by the School of Economics, and the University of Edinburgh Economics society.

A healthy mixture of both students and staff pulled on their dancing shoes to twirl the night away. Local Ceilidh ban Reel Joy were there not only to provide a fantastic rendition of classical Scottish music, but also to help first timers get to grips with the more difficult moves on the night.

Alex Aristidou, a second year undergraduate attending his very first Ceilidh, had this to say of the band and evening:

It was a fantastic experience, one that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was my first time trying to engage in a Ceilidh and I must say that the band made it really comfortable for first timers. I enjoyed the opportunity to discover more of Scotland’s traditions through this very entertaining way. Overall it was a memorable night and I really look forward to the next one.

Christina Kattami, President of the Edinburgh Economics Society, also chimed in with some kind words about Reel Joy and a glowing review from other first timers there on the night:

As a whole, it was an AMAZING night. The event exceeded my expectations and I truly had a lot of fun. The band, Reel Joy, were very good, helping us amateurs in the dancing steps and with a very good programme and schedule of dancing. We will definitely be inviting them for our Economics Ball. It was my second Ceilidh so I sort of knew what to expect but I collected feedback from first-timers - they all felt comfortable with the dancing after the guidance of the band and the rest of the team members and were able to just have fun with it. A lot of students (especially the first years) thought it was great to be able to dance with our school Professors and staff.

The Undergraduate Ceilidh is just one of many events hosted throughout the year, attended by both staff and students. They’re a great opportunity to meet your classmates, as well as your tutors, outside of the classroom environment. Do check out both the Economics Society website and the School of Economics Facebook page for a current list of what’s going on and where.
