What can I expect?

Being part of an EBSOC workshop is a great way to develop and refine your public engagement skills. We welcome all staff and students, no previous experience of public engagement is required. It is a fun and fulfilling day, so come and join our growing EBSOC team!

What happens during an EBSOC workshop? What can you expect?  Read on for an outline of the day.

We ask you to arrive 30 minutes before the workshop to help with the set-up and to have a wee chat about who is coming and about how you communicate your work*.

• There is no public speaking, Jayne (EBSOC officer) will introduce everyone to participants.
• If you are a newbie you will work with a group of 4 participants on one table, all the instructions will come from Jayne.
• There is a 30min – 1 hour lunch break, depending on the workshop.
• If we are using the micropipettes, we will ask you to show the participants how to use them (during the briefing on the day we cover how to do this, Jayne is also able to give you some extra training if it has been a while!). Please note our Primary school workshops do not use micropipettes, so are a good option for non-lab based researchers.
• There is a “Meet the Scientist” networking activity, where you will sit in a circle with a group of participants for 5 minutes, we provide question cards for you and the participants so that you can talk about your work.

At the end of the workshop, there is 30 min clean-up, followed by a group reflection, to discuss how you found the session, reflect on the audience and the techniques that were implemented throughout the workshop to encourage engagement and give everyone the opportunity to participate.

*we welcome all staff and students. Technical staff can talk about the techniques they regularly use in the lab or about the projects they support; undergraduate students can talk about their studies and experience of University.
