Funding For Scientists

A list of possible funding opportunities for public engagement.

There are many public engagement and outreach grants available for your use if you wish to develop and conduct an activity of your own. These grants fund a variety of projects in different fields at varying scales so you can choose the right one for you!

 

  1. Regional Grant

The grant is offered to RSB members around the world and is open to people of all experience levels in public engagement and outreach activities. Small grants offer a maximum of £200 and full grants up to £500. There are two rounds of application, with the March round funding only Biology week events and the September round offering funding the rest of the year. 

Grant amount: up to £500

Application start date/s: 1st September 2018 and 1st March 2019

Deadline: 31st October 2018 and 30th April 2019 (events during Biology week only)

Membership: RSB membership required

 

  1. Biochemical Society- Science Outreach Grants

The Biochemical Society has two rounds of application: September and April. It funds a wide range of events such as lectures and workshops for students and the community. The Society also provides support for outreach events by involving “Potential Collaborators” like industry school liaison officers and University outreach officers. Additionally, information from previous grant holders is provided to give on overview of the type of events the grant is looking to fund.

 

Grant amount: up to £1000

Application start date: open now Deadline: 24th September midday

Membership: Not required

 

  1. Society for Applied Microbiology

The public engagement grant is specially aimed at events which promote microbiology and is open to members and non-members alike. The grant covers a variety of events ranging from music to attending exhibits. If you already have a background in science communication and public engagement, supporting evidence needs to be provided.

 

Grant amount: up to £3000

Application start date: None

Deadline: None

Membership: Not required

Conditions: Event must be conducted at least 6 weeks after submission date.

 

  1. Society for Endocrinology – Public Engagement Grant

It is open to both members of the society and public engagement professionals. The grant offers funding to a variety of activities including online resources such as videos targeting school children and the public but not patients and must revolve around the subject of hormones and the impact of endocrinology.

 

Grant amount: up to £1000

Application start date: Open now

Deadline: noon 26th September 2018

Membership: Not required

Conditions: non- members will be partnered with a society member and must contact the Society before applying.

 

 

  1. Wellcome Trust – Public Engagement Fund

The Wellcome Trust fund is suitable for large scale public engagement activities taking place not only in the UK but also internationally. The fund covers areas such as the UK, Ireland, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific. It is required that the idea must revolve around health, aimed at low income groups and is diverse and inclusive in nature. For the bigger grant of £25,000 to £3 million the Trust must be emailed directly as they are open to ideas all year round. For the smaller grant, there are 4 application rounds.

Grant amount: £25,000- £3 million

Application start dates: For grants ranging from £25,000-£250,000 the application rounds are in May, June, September and January. Currently the September 2018 and January 2019 can be applied for. The application for the January round will open in September 2018.

 

Deadlines: 11th September 2018 (September round) and 11th January 2019 (January round) 

Membership: Not required
