Pet Accident & Emergency: Building Bones
Find out how bones work, what makes them special and how they grow and repair. This unique workshop brings the expertise of bone scientists and vets together to learn about bones and the different ways they can be mended. Help us choose the right treatment for Dougal the dog.

Workshop Description
Find out how bones work, what makes them special and how they grow and repair. This unique workshop brings the expertise of bone scientists and bone vets together to learn about bones and the different ways they can be mended. Help us choose the right treatment for Dougal the dog.
Learning Objectives
- To understand the function of the bones
- To identify how the shape of bones help them do their job
- To explore the different bone building and bone blasting cells that help bones grow and repair
- To diagnose Dougal the dog’s injury using real evidence
- To reveal the world of work in a small animal hospital and Roslin Institute lab
Workshop Activities
- Looking at X-rays to diagnose different types of breaks
- Using microscopes to examine real bone and its parts
- Bone mending open-ended experimental design
- Discussion with bone scientists, vets, vet nurses and students from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies that work in the Hospital for Small Animals
