Discovery Day for RMPS Highers pupils, 20 June 2019

A day of sample lectures and classes in the beautiful surroundings of New College, and a chance to meet other pupils and teachers of RMPS from across the city.

Who should attend?

This event is aimed at pupils in Edinburgh who are entering Highers or Advanced Highers in RMPS.

What's on offer?

Lecture options will include Islam, Buddhism, religion and peace, religion and migration, and miracles.

Additional non-curricula tasters will also be offered, including sessions on religion and Scottish literature, and the chance to learn New Testament Greek or the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit. There will also be a tour of New College and a short talk on why pupils might be interested in studying Theology or Religious Studies at university.

Programme

10-10.15am: Arrival – gather in the Rainy Hall

10.15-10.25am: Welcome, from Prof Helen Bond, Head of School

10.30-11.15am:  Session 1

  • The Earth and the Heavens as understood by Muslims (Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room, Dr Omar Anchassi)
  • Buddhist approaches to the problem of evil (Martin Hall, Dr Naomi Appleton)
  • Being foreign by definition: Early Christian approaches to cultural identity (Althaus-Reid Room, Dr Sara Parvis)
  • Learn some New Testament Greek (Oldham/Porteous Room, Prof Helen Bond)

11.15-11.30am: Break

11.30am-12.15pm: Session 2

  • Miracles (Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room, Dr Sarah Lane-Ritchie)
  • Religion and literature (Martin Hall, Dr Alison Jack)
  • Learn some Sanskrit (Althaus Reid Room, Dr Chris Clark)
  • What does the Old Testament have to say about environmental issues? (Baillie Room, Dr Suzanna Millar)

12.15pm: Students will be divided into groups for lunch and tours

12.15-12.50pmm

GROUP A: Lunch in the Rainy Hall

GROUP B: Tours of New College including the library, and a chance to meet current students. Assemble in the foyer.

  • Morality, Conflict and Peace (Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room, Prof Jolyon Mitchell)
  • Religion and Migration (Martin Hall, Dr Ulrich Schmiedel)
  • Gender and dharma in the Hindu Epics (Althaus-Reid Room, Dr Naomi Appleton)

2.15-2.45pm: Studying Theology and Religious Studies at university – why, how, where?

Practicalities

This event is free, though pupils will need to bring a packed lunch and schools will need to arrange their own transport.
