Cunningham Lecture Series: Migration of Christianity, Christianity of Migration

Peter C. Phan, who has earned three doctorates, is the inaugural holder of the Ignacio Ellacuria Chair of Catholic Social Thought at Georgetown University, USA. His research deals with the theology of icon in Orthodox theology, patristic theology, eschatology, the history of Christian missions in Asia, and liberation, inculturation and interreligious dialogue. He is the author and editor of over 30 books and has published over 300 essays. His writings have been translated into Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Spanish, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, and Vietnamese, and have received many awards from learned societies. He is the first non-Anglo to be elected President of Catholic Theological Society of America and President of American Theological Society. In 2010 he received the John Courtney Murray Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Catholic Theological Society of America for outstanding achievement in theology.

The following is a brief synopsis on each of the Cunningham Lectures:

Monday 22 October 2018 - Lecture 1: Could Christianity have become a world religion without migrations? The lecture traces the correlations between the developments of Christianity with the great mass people movements and argue that the Christian Church is essentially Church of migrants and a migrant Church.   This first lecture will be followed by a drinks Reception.

 

Wednesday 24 October 2018 - Lecture 2: How can Christian theology be reformulated in light of an ecclesiology of migration? The lecture offers reflections on God as Deus Migrator, Jesus as the Paradigmatic Migrant, and the Spirit as the Power of Migration.

 

Thursday 25 October 2018 - Lecture 3: What ethical responsibilities does migration enjoin on both the receiving countries and the migrants? The lecture reflects on hospitality toward migrants and memory by migrants of their own histories.
