Professor Jamie Davies awarded MRC project grant

The grant has been awarded for the research project "Advancing renal tissue engineering: equipping tissue-engineered kidneys with a ureter".

Prof. Jamie Davies of the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences has been awarded an MRC project grant which will provide his lab with £420k over 3 years for the research project "Advancing renal tissue engineering: equipping tissue-engineered kidneys with a ureter".

This project will allow us to make further advances in our goal of making transplantable kidneys from human stem cells. Previous work has brought us to the point that we can make anatomically realistic (though small) kidneys from mouse stem cells, and ones that are less realistic from human stem cells. The aims of this project are twofold: to advance the human system to where the mouse one is now, and to make further advances in the mouse system to produce an engineered kidney with a proper ureter

The project will also provide a post-doctoral position for Mona Elhendawy, who developed methods critical to it and who is currently writing up her PhD thesis.

Congratualtions!
