Background

Steve has worked for the University of Edinburgh since 2012 having become involved in the then MSc in Primary Dental Care.  His role was to develop teaching material before moving onto online tutoring, a role he carried out for nine years.  In February 2023, he was appointed Programme Director of the now MSc Restorative Dentistry.  He also currently holds a Senior Clinical Lecturer/Locum Hon. Consultant post in Edinburgh Dental Institute overseeing the DClinDent students in Endodontics and the trainees in Restorative Dentistry.

Steve worked as a general dental practitioner in private dental practice in Aberdeen for 27 years where he accepted referrals for restorative and surgical cases.  He taught restorative dentistry at undergraduate level for nearly ten years at the University of Dundee and for eight years in the Institute of Dentistry at the University of Aberdeen as a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry, responsible for delivering the Application of Dental Materials and Biomaterials course.  He has written an undergraduate textbook “A Clinical Guide to Applied Dental Materials” which was published in December 2012.  He is heavily involved in postgraduate dental education having lectured throughout the UK.  He is also actively involved in research having published nearly forty original papers in peer reviewed journals.  He is a reviewer for a number of dental journals and a key influencer for a number of dental material and equipment manufacturers.

Research interests

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in relation to endodontics and the clinical performance of dental materials.
