Dr Catherine Martin holds an MA in English Literature & French and a PhD in French Literature & Language.
After teaching French at the University of St Andrews, she trained as a chartered accountant, working in audit and corporate finance for global accountancy firms, Arthur Andersen, Deloitte and Mazars LLP.
Dr Martin joined the University of Glasgow in 2010 as College Secretary in the College of Arts, from which position she moved to the University of Edinburgh in 2015.
Catherine is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was until recently a member of the Arts & Humanities Research Council audit committee.
Having held a variety of other non-executive director and trustee roles, she is currently on the board of Edinburgh University Press Ltd, Edinburgh Innovations Ltd and is a member of the Scotland Advisory Group for Parkinson's UK.

Chris has over thirty years of Planning, Operations, and Risk Management experience drawn from military, government, corporate and private business perspectives. Before coming to The University of Edinburgh, he developed and implemented new government-wide Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) policy and practice for the Province of British Columbia, Canada, for the integration of risk management into business planning across diverse ministries and Crown corporations. Prior to this he served as an officer in the Canadian Forces.
In his current role, Chris is responsible for facilitating the implementation of the risk management framework and process across the University, assisting with the analysis of operational level risk and the roll-up of significant risks to the strategic level, and providing risk management advice and assistance to all organizations within the University.
Chris holds an MA in Leadership from Royal Roads University, a BA in Political Science from The University of Western Ontario, and a Certified Risk Manager designation from Simon Fraser University.
The Business Continuity Manager is part of Risk and Resilience Services, and is responsible to the Risk Manager for:
- Developing and implementing the University’s BCM Policy and Framework and BCM Programme.
- Supporting Colleges, Professional Services Groups and Subsidiary Corporations to enhance their resilience with the development of cross-University procedures, templates and methodologies.
- Providing bespoke Business Continuity advice and assistance to all organisations within the university.
Catherine joined Corporate Services as PA to the Director in September 2009 having been with the University of Edinburgh since 2006, previously working in the School of GeoSciences and in the cross-college International Development Centre. Prior to joining the University Catherine spent a number of years living and working in Japan as an English language instructor and teacher trainer, and completing her degree in Japanese Studies at University of Stirling, moved back in to an administrative career on her return to the UK.
Susan is responsible for overseeing and supervising the day-to-day building-related operations of Charles Stewart House including reception and support services staff.
