Albert Tenesa

Professor Albert Tenesa, Co-Principal Investigator

Albert Tenesa studied agricultural engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He then came to Edinburgh to study an MSc in Quantitative Genetics and Genome Analysis. His PhD was carried out in quantitative genetics under the supervision of Peter Visscher and Sara Knott, at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh. After a postdoc with Professor Malcolm Dunlop he became a group leader at the Roslin Institute (where he holds a joint appointment). Albert’s research at the MRC Human Genetics Unit aims to understand how genetic variation contributes to phenotypic variation of complex traits in humans.

He's now started work on this project and is excited to see the results it may bring.

Professor Jim Wilson, Co-Principal Investigator

Professor Jim Wilson Speaking

Jim grew up in Orkney, Scotland and is the Chief Investigator of the ORCADES, VIKING and VIKING II studies. He studied genetics in Edinburgh before going to Oxford for a DPhil in human population genetics. He returned to Edinburgh in 2003 after a stint at University College London, to take up a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. He has published over 260 peer-reviewed journal articles, and is a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher. His scientific interests include the genetic architecture of complex traits, with particular focus on the study of isolated populations. He heads up a team of analysts using population cohort data to better understand the genetic contribution to traits of public health importance. Jim is leading the recruitment of 4,000 further participants from Orkney and Shetland, as part of the Quantitative Traits in Health and Disease research programme at the MRC Human Genetics Unit.
