Questions on our programme and career development.

Will the award of an MSc in Internal Medicine entitle me to a medical post in the UK?

The programme leads to the award of an academic (Masters) degree in Internal Medicine. Like other academic awards (e.g. PhD) this alone does not entitle you to any job but should be seen as strengthening your academic credentials when applying for any competitively advertised post. You should also note that, in order to be able to work in the UK you will need to be registered with the General Medical Council, hold an appropriate work permit and be able to demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written English.

Will the award of an MSc in Internal Medicine entitle me to register with the General Medical Council?

Registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practise is dependent on your ability to demonstrate your medical qualifications and English language proficiency. You can find out more about the registration process at the GMC application page.

Will the award of an MSc in Internal Medicine mean that I become a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh?

All of our students are given associate membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh which entitles them to benefit from many of the College’s educational resources. However, although undertaking our Programme is an excellent basis of acquiring the knowledge and skills that are essential for passing the MRCP (UK) examination, that is a separate qualification. You can find out more details about the MRCP (UK) examination here.

Will I be able to organise a clinical placement in Edinburgh as part of the MSc Programme?

There are no clinical placements arranged as part of this online distance learning programme. However, some of our students have benefitted from ad hoc placements with clinicians who they have encountered as part of the teaching programme.

Will the MSc programme be relevant to me of I already have MRCP?

Although one of the primary reasons for undertaking our Programme is to prepare for postgraduate medical assessments such as MRCP we thing that the broad range of clinical medicine we cover will be valued by any physician looking to refresh their knowledge and skills across specialties relevant to internal medicine.
