Inflammatory arthropathies
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or simply lupus) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, mostly affecting women, which is associated with an increased risk of stroke for reasons which are incompletely understood.
Overview
At Edinburgh Imaging, we are interested in better understanding how this disease affects the brain. We have shown an increase in imaging markers of small vessel disease such as enlarged perivascular spaces which might be accelerated in this population, & relationships with impact on cognitive ability. We use routine & advanced brain MRI, including connectomics & graph theory to describe the connections in the brain, & how these connections might be influenced by the disease.
