The University’s Chancellor, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal opens Edinburgh Imaging facilities at QMRI and RIE.

Two advanced medical scanners have been installed as part of a £14 million makeover of research imaging facilities at the University of Edinburgh.

Today, the imaging facilities where the new scanners are located, were opened by the University’s Chancellor, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

Our 3 medical imaging facilities are hospital embedded, which means they can support acute research:

1. Edinburgh Imaging facility (QMRI) – home of Scotland’s first PET-MR scanner

  • Siemens Biograph mMR (PET-MR) 

  • Two PET-CT scanners

  • GE PETtrace Cyclotron

  • MHRA accredited radiochemistry suite

  • 3T wide bore MRI scanner

  • Multi-modal retinal imaging (e.g. fundus camera, optical coherence tomography)

  • Image analysis suite 

2. Edinburgh Imaging facility (RIE) – our 3T MR scanner, that focuses on 'imaging the brain across the lifecourse'

  • Siemens MAGNETOM Prisma 3T MRI scanner

3. Edinburgh Imaging facility (WGH) – our neuro-optimised 1.5T MR scanner

  • GE Signa 1.5T MRI scanner
