Musculoskeletal imaging: appendicular arthropathies; axial joint disease; & infective musculoskeletal disorders

Modules, lectures & learning objectives:

  • Module 1: Appendicular arthropathies
    • Lecture 1: Degenerative & degenerative-like joint disease
      • State the clinical differences between inflammatory, degenerative & atypical arthropathies

      • List & identify imaging characteristics of & which distinguish between:

        • Primary osteoarthritis (OA)

        • Secondary OA

        • Other conditions that can simulate OA

      • Explain MR’s role in osteoarthritis diagnosis & management

    • Lecture 2: Inflammatory & connective tissue arthropathies
      • State the imaging & clinical features of joint inflammatory diseases

      • List & identify the shared characteristics of inflammatory joint disorders

      • List & identify imaging features which distinguish between septic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondylo-arthropathies (SpA), & gout

      • State the imaging & clinical features of connective tissue diseases

    • Lecture 3: Non-infectious synovial proliferative processes
      • State the MR imaging & clinical features of noninfectious proliferative synovial processes

      • List & identify the shared & discriminating features of synovial processes

      • List the MR sequences which help diagnose PVNS, synovial osteochondromatosis & lipoma arborescence

      • Discuss conventional radiography’s role in  differentiating MR PVNS from synovial osteochondromatosis

  • Module 2: Axial joint diseases
    • Lecture 1: Imaging in low back pain
      • Describe what is meant by low back pain

      • Describe the differences between specific & non-specific back pain

      • State the red flags that indicate a patient may have a serious condition

      • State the guidelines for imaging in low back pain

    • Lecture 2: Degenerative spine
      • List & identify the shared & discriminating imaging features of the degenerative spine, including of:

        • Degenerative disc disease

        • Posterior elements

        • Secondary changes e.g. spinal stenosis & instability

    • Lecture 3: Inflammatory spinal arthropathies
      • List & identify the shared & discriminating imaging features of spinal inflammatory joint diseases

      • Describe demographic & clinical characteristics of spinal inflammatory joint diseases

      • Explain how spinal inflammatory joint diseases differ from degenerative spinal disease

      • List & identify the shared & discriminating imaging features of spinal & sacroiliac joints spondylo-arthropathies & rheumatoid arthritis

  • Module 3: Infective musculoskeletal disorders
    • Lecture 1: Peripheral musculoskeletal infections
      • List & identify the shared & discriminating clinical & imaging features of peripheral infectious bone, joint & soft tissue diseases

      • Choose the optimal imaging modalities for musculoskeletal infection evaluation

    • Lecture 2: Axial musculoskeletal infections
      • List & identify the shared & discriminating clinical & imaging features of axial infectious bone, joint & soft tissue diseases

      • Differentiate on imaging, spondylo-discitis from similar appearing non-infectious conditions
