Centre for Reproductive Health

What tests and treatments might be offered?

Your care will be individualised and we may offer you some tests that are not routinely available.

TVUSS scan

Some of these tests may be offered regularly during your pregnancy. Tests that may be offered include:

  • Urine tests, blood tests or vaginal swabs: These may screen for infection, or be tests of the likelihood of preterm birth (eg fetal fibronectin)
  • Transvaginal Ultrasound scan: This is an internal scan, where a thin ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina to measure the length of your cervix. A short cervix may mean an increased risk of late miscarriage or preterm birth. The result of the scan is available immediately. The scan is not painful but there may be some mild discomfort.

Any tests offered will be fully discussed with you and your partner beforehand.

All of the tests are safe for you and your baby.

What treatments will I be offered if I am at increased risk?

There are some treatments that we may offer you to try to reduce the risks of preterm birth.

For example some women may be offered a stitch in the neck of the womb (cervical suture) or hormone treatments (Progesterone). Alternatively, a cervical pessary may be offered as part of a research study.

All treatments will be individualised and options will be fully discussed with you by your doctor at the clinic.

These treatments  will be available in both Simpsons Centre( Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh) and St Johns Hospital in Livingston.
