Dr Jackie Maybin successfully paired with local MP

Dr Jackie Maybin, a Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has been paired with MP Tommy Sheppard, as part of the Royal Society Pairing Scheme 2017.

Thirty research scientists are currently being matched with UK parliamentarians and civil servants. They will learn about each other’s work by spending time in both Westminster and the researcher’s institutions.

This scheme, which was founded in 2001, gives policymakers and research scientists an opportunity to experience each other’s worlds. It aims to build bridges between parliamentarians and some of the best scientists in the UK.

Those taking part gain an insight into how research findings can help inform policy making and will develop a better understanding of how to get involved.

As well as working closely with Tommy Sheppard, Dr Maybin will make lasting relationships with parliamentarians and fellow scientists working across a wide range of disciplines, and will learn how to effectively feed into the policy making process that takes place in Westminster.

The politicians and civil servants will in turn learn more about the science behind health issues and have access to information on policy topics that are being scrutinised in parliament, directly from the experts.

 Dr Jackie Maybin will meet Tommy Sheppard in the near future to begin the pairing programme. Part of the activity will include Mr Sheppard donning a lab coat and visiting the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health to learn more about her investigation into the root cause of heavy menstrual bleeding with the aim of developing effective treatment plans for the women affected, and Dr Maybin will visit Westminster.

The Royal Society received applications from scientists across a variety of disciplines including technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics.
