Thirty research scientists will be paired with UK parliamentarians and civil servants later in the year. They will learn about each other’s work by spending time in both Westminster and the researcher’s institutions. Those taking part gain an insight into how research findings can help inform policy making and will develop a better understanding of how to get involved.

This scheme, which was founded in 2001, gives policymakers and research scientists an opportunity to experience each other’s worlds. Scientists will learn how to effectively feed into the policy making process that takes place in Westminster. They will form relationships with politicians and civil servants, who will in turn learn more about the science behind health issues and have access to information on policy topics that are being scrutinised in parliament, directly from the experts.

Each year the Royal Society receives applications from scientists across a variety of disciplines including technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics. If Dr Maybin is selected to participate, her paired parliamentarian will visit the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health to learn more about her investigation into the root cause of heavy menstrual bleeding with the key aim of developing personalised, effective treatment plans for the women affected.

A select group of parliamentarians and civil servants is currently being recruited and the list of successful pairings will be announced in the early autumn.
