What is it?

This category covers all other causes of problematic periods, including rare causes or conditions were bleeding may not be the main symptom. Endometriosis is the most common condition in this category. Endometriosis is where the endometrium (womb lining) is found outside the womb, most commonly on the ovaries or the inside wall of the abdomen.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are where arteries connect directly with veins. This occurs rarely in the endometrium and can cause very heavy bleeding. Another rare condition included in this category is an isthmocoele, caused by one or more caesarean sections. This is a thinning or a pouch like defect at the site of a previous caesarean section cut on the womb. This can cause abnormal bleeding, particularly spotting after menstruation.

What are the symptoms?

These vary with each condition. Common symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain, bowel problems, bladder problems, problematic menstrual bleeding, subfertility and fatigue.
