Iatrogenic (caused by medications or surgery)

Facts about Iatrogenic.

What is it?

This is when problematic bleeding is due to the medications you are taking.

What are the symptoms?

Heavy, irregular or prolonged menstrual bleeding

What causes it?

Progesterone-like medications are a common cause of problematic bleeding. Some women experience troublesome bleeding while taking the progesterone only pill, the contraceptive injection or the hormone releasing intrauterine system. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/ius-intrauterine-system/

Anticoagulant medications may be prescribed to prevent blood clots, particularly if you have had a previous clot, have had a surgical procedure or have a heart condition. These medications thin the blood and can result in heavy menstrual bleeding while you are taking the medications.

How is it diagnosed?

This is usually diagnosed by looking at the timing of the start of your bleeding problems and whether this coincided with starting a new medication. If appropriate, your doctor may recommend a trial without the medication to see if things improve. Care must be taken if you are relying on a hormonal medication for contraception to ensure you do not have an unplanned pregnancy.

How is it treated?

If possible and safe, the medication you are taking should be changed. If this is not possible, another medication to treat heavy periods may be started if safe to do so.
