In 1999, Andrew Horne obtained a competitive entry Clinical Training Fellowship from the Medical Research Council and used this opportunity to complete a PhD focused principally on the role of the endometrium (womb lining) in reproduction at the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology at Imperial College London. Back in Edinburgh, he completed his core clinical training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology between 2002 and 2005. During this time he combined his research interest with the development of laparoscopic (key hole surgery) skills as a Clinical Fellow in Gynaecological Endoscopy with the University of Toronto in 2005 until his appointment as a Clinical Lecturer in Edinburgh later that year. In 2010, he was appointed as a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant Gynaecologist in Edinburgh.  He subsequently developed both clinical and research interests in pelvic pain and endometriosis, and established EXPPECT Edinburgh. He was awarded a Personal Chair at the University of Edinburgh in 2014. He is President-elect of the World Endometriosis Society and Trustee to Endometriosis UK. He is Co-Editor in Chief of Reproduction and Fertility. He is the Past Chair of the Academic Board at the RCOG, Past Chair of the ESHRE Special Interest Group for Endometriosis and Endometrial Disorders, Past UK ESHRE National Representative, and a recent member of the NICE and ESHRE Endometriosis Guideline Committees. Professor Horne became an Associate Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2019. In 2020, he was awarded Fellowship ad hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2021, in recognition of his research into pelvic pain and endometriosis, he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Professor Horne is Scientific Advisor to the Scottish Chief Medical Officer for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.


Dr Kirsty Munro (MD, MRCOG)

Kirsty Munro graduated from Edinburgh University and did most of her obstetric and gynaecology clinical training in Edinburgh. After obtaining a UK wide competitive entry advanced training post in endometriosis and minimal access surgery, she spent 2 years in Bristol (Southmead Hospital) where she worked in a nationally recognised BSGE Endometriosis Centre.


Dr Stuart A Jack (MD, MSc, MRCOG)

Stuart Jack is a graduate of Edinburgh University, training in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary before taking up a Consultant Post in 2007. He was a Chief Scientist Office Research Fellow at Aberdeen University where he studied Endometrial Ablation techniques. His area of expertise lies in Minimal Access Surgery with a special interest in Endometriosis. With his colleagues in Aberdeen he set up the first Scottish BSGE Endometriosis Centre. He moved to Edinburgh in 2014, and works to further develop EXPPECT Edinburgh's Endometriosis service.


Dr Mayank Madhra (MRCOG)

Mayank Madhra graduated from Edinburgh University and did most of his obstetric and gynaecology clinical training in Edinburgh and South-East Scotland. After obtaining a UK wide competitive entry advanced training post in endometriosis and minimal access surgery, he spent the final two years of his postgraduate training in Edinburgh as part of the EXPPECT nationally recognised BSGE Endometriosis Centre. During this time he focussed on Endometriosis surgery and Medical Education.

Lucy Whitaker graduated from the University of Edinburgh and after two years in Christchurch Women’s Hospital in New Zealand, has done her obstetric and gynaecology training in Edinburgh and South East Scotland. After obtaining a Scotland wide competitive entry advanced training post in endometriosis and minimal access surgery, she spent the final four years of her postgraduate training in Edinburgh as part of the EXPPECT nationally recognised BSGE Endometriosis Centre. During this time she focussed on Endometriosis Surgery and Menopause.

Alongside this she has completed an MSc in Surgical Sciences and is a Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.


Dr Maya Chetty (MD, MRCOG, MBBS)

Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine, Edinburgh Fertility Centre, NHS Lothian

Maya Chetty is a Consultant Gynaecologist, and subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery based in the Edinburgh Fertility Centre and Department of Reproductive Endocrinology. She has particular interests in assisted reproduction and fertility preservation, and is the clinical lead for fertility preservation at Edinburgh Fertility Centre.


Professor Colin Duncan (MD, FRCOG)

Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Science, University of Edinburgh

Colin Duncan is an academic Consultant Gynaecologist, and subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, based in the Edinburgh Fertility Centre and Department of Reproductive Endocrinology. His clinical interests are infertility, ovulation induction, reproductive endocrinology and early pregnancy problems. He is a Principal Investigator in the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh and runs a research laboratory that studies how the ovary works and how ovarian function can be improved in the treatment of subfertility.


Dr Karolina Skorupskaite Carlyle  (MBChB, BSc, PhD, MRCOG)

Karolina Skorupskaite Carlyle is a Consultant in Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecology at Edinburgh Fertility Centre.  Karolina achieved her sub-specialist accreditation in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. She is a graduate from the University of Edinburgh Medical School as well as a first class BSc Honours awardee in Reproductive Biology. Karolina’s research has contributed to the University of Edinburgh receiving The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education award for innovations in women’s health. Passionate about the effects of endometriosis on fertility, Karolina has published the British Fertility Society guideline on the management of patients with endometriosis undergoing fertility treatment. She is actively involved in national guideline development on fertility preservation in severe endometriosis. 


Pain Specialists

Dr Lorraine Harrington (MBChB, BSc (Hons) Immunology, MRCP, FRCA, FFPMRCA)

Lorraine Harrington

Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, NHS Lothian

Lorraine Harrington is a Consultant in Pain Medicine working throughout Lothian.  Whilst completing her pain training in Edinburgh and Tayside, Lorraine successfully passed her FFPMRCA and was awarded the Distinction Medal for highest performing candidate.  In addition to her general interest in pain, Lorraine has a specialist interest in men and women suffering from abdomino-pelvic pain. 

Lorraine is committed to driving forward research into pain, such that treatments to reduce suffering and improve quality of life can be developed. She is the Principal Investigator for two international multi-centre drug trials looking at the development of new pain medication.  Additionally, Lorraine has recently edited the 'Acute Pain' chapter within 'Smith and Aitkenhead's Textbook of Anaesthesia'.

When not involved with pain, Lorraine is a Consultant Anaesthetist based at St John's Hospital, Livingston.


Dr Sarah Young (MA (Hons), D.Clin.Psy.)

Clinical Psychologist, NHS Lothian

Sarah Young completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Glasgow. She has worked in various settings as a psychologist, including currently in the Pain Management Service at the Astley Ainslie Hospital. She has an interest in the role of psychology in helping people to cope with the impact of chronic pain on their lives.


Nurse Specialist

Mrs Mia Jiang

Clinical Nurse Specialist, NHS Lothian

Mia first qualified as a registered nurse in China in 1989 and worked in gynaecology, general medicine and infectious disease wards as a staff nurse. Mia then retrained at Edinburgh Napier University and qualified as a staff nurse in 2014. After working on a gynaecology inpatient ward for about three years, she developed an interest in endometriosis and pelvic pain and became an endometriosis and pelvic pain nurse specialist in August 2022.


Dietitian

Ms Cliona McGreevy (PgD, MSc, BSc)

Cliona McGreevy is a registered Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Cliona qualified with a postgraduate diploma in Dietetics from Queen Margaret University in 2019. Prior to this she completed a Masters in Human Nutrition from Ulster University and a BSc in Biochemistry from National University of Ireland Galway. Cliona has worked in various clinical areas as an acute dietitian, currently working in the critical care setting at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as well as part of the EXPPECT team. Cliona has an interest in the use of dietary modification to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms which may be related to pelvic pain and improve patients’ quality of life. 


Colorectal Surgeons

Mr Mark Potter (BSc, MBChB, MD, FRCS, FRSCEd)

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, NHS Lothian

Mark Potter is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. This is a dedicated Colorectal Unit, as well as serving the population of Edinburgh it has a large tertiary referral practice from all areas of Scotland. The Colorectal Unit is one of the largest in Europe and has an international research reputation.  His practice includes all aspects of colorectal surgery, in particular laparoscopic surgery, cancer surgery, endometriosis and advanced colonoscopy.

He is a member of the EXPPECT Endometriosis Team in Edinburgh contributing to the surgical management of advanced complicated endometriosis where there is bowel involvement. The vast majority of this complicated surgery can now be undertaken using laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques.

He has a keen interest in surgical training being member of the development and examination boards for the on line Edinburgh Surgical Sciences Qualification (ESSQ) from its inception in 2006. This is a collaboration between the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh.

He is on the Faculty for the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Course in Dundee since 2009 teaching advanced laparoscopic surgery to senior trainees.

He is a member of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) Education Committee.

He is medical advisor to Professor Alan Murray, School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh for the IMAPCT Trial (Implantable Microsystems for Personalised Anti-cancer Therapy).

His current research interests include surgical site infection and anastomotic leak.


Miss Sarah Goodbrand (MBChB, BMSc (Hons), MD, FRCSEd)

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, NHS Lothian

Sarah Goodbrand is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. All her surgical training was undertaken in Edinburgh as well as two advanced laparoscopic colorectal fellowships in Sydney and Oxford. She has subspecialist interests in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), robotic colorectal surgery, and complex gynaecological cancer surgery cases.  She also has a keen interest in surgical training and is the current South East Scotland Training Programme Director for General Surgery.


Urologist

Miss Voula Granitsiotis (MBBS, FRCS (Urol))

Voula Granitsiotis

Consultant Urologist, NHS Lothian

Voula Granitsiotis graduated from Athens Kapodistrian University in 1990 and after her internship in Athens moved to Glasgow for higher surgical training.

Her general surgical and subsequent urological training was based primarily in the west of Scotland but also involved a period of training in Edinburgh to acquire further technical training in the management of complex female urology and reconstruction. Prior to taking up her consultant post at the Southern General and Victoria Infirmary Hospitals in 2006, she spent a brief period of specialised training in USA (Duke University, UC Davis and USC Norris) with interests in complex female incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction and in urological management of spina bifida patients and bladder reconstruction.

She has been the lead clinician for the diagnosis and management of recurrent incontinence with the establishment of video-urodynamics for the west of Scotland. She has been the lead clinician for the female incontinence MDT in urology and the sole urologist dealing with diagnosis and surgical treatment of vaginal mesh complications (along with the lead urogynaecologist in the west of Scotland). During her time as a consultant at the Southern General (now QEUH), she dealt with most of the urological problems arising from gynaecological surgery.

She has been the second named urologist at the national SNS service for the treatment of idiopathic female urinary retention (Fowler’s syndrome) and refractory detrusor overactivity.

Since June 2016, due to family reasons, she moved to Edinburgh and was appointed as a consultant urologist at the Western General Hospital with special interest in complex female incontinence, urological problems in patients with neurological disease, and bladder reconstruction.

She continues as the sole urologist to the national service for vaginal mesh complications and works alongside urogynaecologists and the main patient group to promote appropriate treatment for female incontinence.


Radiologists

Dr Siobhan McLaughlin (MRCP, FRCR)

Siobhan McLaughlin

Consultant Radiologist, NHS Lothian

Siobhan McLaughlin graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1999. She worked in General Medicine, gaining her MRCP in 2002, before commencing Radiology training, obtaining her FRCR in 2006. In 2008 she was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. In 2015 her team won an NHS Health Hero Award for Innovation.

As a cross sectional clinical radiologist she has many other specialist interests, including benign and malignant gynaecological disease. She provides radiology input for the South East Scotland Gynaecology Oncology Multi Disciplinary Team Meeting and the EXPPECT Edinburgh Endometriosis Service and MDT.


Dr Judith Anderson (FRCR)

Judith Anderson has worked as a Consultant Radiologist with a subspecialist interest in Gynaecological Imaging at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh since 2007. She is also Training Programme Director.
