Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis

The Gastroenterology unit is recruiting patients now for a clinical trial investigating chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.

The Gastroenterology unit runs a number of clinical research projects investigating the pathogenesis, epidemiology and management of the chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Our studies are strongly supported by the research active IBD clinicians at the Western General Hospital.

Recruiting Now - PREdiCCt Study

Our researchers are coordinating a UK wide study called PREdiCCt, which will investigate how environmental factors, diet and gut micro-organisms influence Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis flare. PREdiCCt launched across the UK in January 2017 and will be looking for people who suffer from IBD to take part in the study.

To sign up to this study please email: predicct@ed.ac.uk.

Visit the PREdiCCt website for further information.

SPARE Trial

In the UK the SPARE trial is being coordinated by the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit and will include twenty-one sites across Scotland (including the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh), England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Over 2 years SPARE aims to recruit 70 participants in the UK with sustained Crohn’s disease remission without steroids for at least 6 months and treated with combination therapy. We are currently in the set-up phase, and further information about joining this study will become available shortly.
