Public Finance Accountancy

Although you need a degree for entry it is not necessary to have studied a particular subject. If you have studied a related subject you may be able to gain exemptions from aspects of the CIPFA qualification.

While this role is tied to the public sector you could work in a wide range of environments e.g. central government, housing associations, the NHS.

Government Finance Profession - develops and oversees the implementation of strategies for improving management of financial resources across central government. The site includes a vacancies section covering finance jobs across central government - although some are for qualified accountants and senior staff.

Public auditing

National Audit Office - scrutinises public spending on behalf of parliament, independent of government. The website contains details of their graduate recruitment scheme.

Audit Scotland - provides the Auditor General and the Accounts Commission with the services they need to check that public money is spent properly, efficiently and effectively in Scotland. Site includes a useful careers section.
