Careers Consultants

Our Careers Consultants specialise in providing support to students in particular Schools within the University and some work on projects to enhance our services to students and graduates.

Our Consultants also contribute to the central provision at the Careers Service including our programme of talks and workshops.

Helen Stringer

Helen leads the team of Careers Consultants working across all three Colleges and is responsible for developing strong academic partnerships. A history graduate, she has ten years' experience in the careers profession including practitioner and management roles within higher education. Helen works Monday - Friday.

Suzanne Agnew

Suzanne is the link Careers Consultant for Moray House. She is a biological sciences graduate of the University of Edinburgh with a PG Dip in Careers Education Information & Guidance in Higher Education from the University of Reading. Suzanne worked in the Information Team for several years building up expertise in a range of career areas and knowledge of the sector before moving to the Careers Consultants team. Suzanne works Monday to Thursday and is based in the Main Library Building.

Kyla Atkinson

Kyla has recently joined the Careers Service, after graduating with a PG Diploma in Career Guidance and Development from Edinburgh Napier University. Her previous background is in education and the third sector. Kyla has an MSc in Inclusive and Special Education from the University of Edinburgh and a BSc in Psychology and Education from Bath Spa University. Kyla works Monday-Friday and is based at the Main Library Building and Murchison House, King’s Buildings.

Kay Barbour

Kay is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Law. She has experience across a range of roles in Careers and Student Services in Higher Education and worked for a number of other universities before joining the team at Edinburgh. Kay works Tuesday - Friday, and is based at the Main Library Building.

Gina Black

Gina is the link Careers Consultant for Edinburgh College of Art. A graduate of English and French from The University of Aberdeen, Gina also has an MSc by Research in Postcolonial Literature from The University of Edinburgh. She previously enjoyed diverse work in publishing and education before training as a careers professional with an MSc in Careers Management and Coaching and moving into Higher Education careers work. Gina works Monday – Thursday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Susan Bird

Susan works with undergraduate and postgraduate students across the College of Science & Engineering. Her caseload responsibility includes the Medical and Vet Schools and the School of Physics and Astronomy. A graduate from Aberdeen and Edinburgh Napier universities, her careers path includes medical underwriting, product development within an SME and careers information work before joining the University as a Careers Consultant. Interests in careers work include transitions into, through and beyond university and writing her Physics Careers Blog. Susan works Monday - Thursday and is based at Murchison House, King's Buildings.

Kirsti Ferrier

Kirsti is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures as well as the School of Divinity. After a degree in Psychology, Kirsti worked in corporate and commercial settings in London, including roles in management and running her own recruitment business. Since moving to Edinburgh in 2002 she has gained further qualifications in Coaching and Psychotherapy and has provided Career Consultancy, guidance and support in both the Private and Public sectors. Kirsti works Monday - Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Rebecca Valentine

Rebecca joined the Careers Service in 2009 and is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.  She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in geography and worked in training and development roles in the financial sector before training as a Careers Consultant. Rebecca works Monday - Friday based at the Main Library Building and also offers appointments at King's Buildings on a regular basis.

Deborah Fowlis

Deborah is the Careers Consultant for the School of Chemistry and for Chemical Engineering. She has a degree in Zoology and a PhD in Immunology from the University of Edinburgh and has worked as a postdoc in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Paris. Deborah is based at Murchison House, King’s Buildings and works on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Sarah Innes

Sarah is the Careers Consultant for the School of Geosciences. With careers experience in university careers services in the UK and Middle East, and as a practitioner in international student support, Sarah recently returned to the Careers Service at the University of Edinburgh after a 4 year career break. Sarah qualified in Careers Guidance in 1991, completing her education at the universities of Strathclyde and Birmingham. Sarah’s working days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and she works at Murchison House, King’s Buildings.

Carol Macdonald

Carol is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Biomedical Sciences. She has experience across a range of roles within university careers services, most recently focusing on postgraduate student support. She is a graduate of both Glasgow and Strathclyde universities. Her normal working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Sharon Maguire

Sharon is responsible for leading, coordinating and delivering developments in Careers Service support for taught and research postgraduate students, including online distance learning students. She has a PhD in life sciences and worked in medical research for a number of years before re-training as a careers professional. Sharon works Monday - Thursday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Sharon is currently on secondment.

Steve Norman

Steve is the Careers Consultant for the Business School and the School of Informatics. He is also leading on internationalisation in the Service. Steve is a graduate in Politics, History and Sociology  and also has a Diploma in Careers Guidance. In 2005 he undertook a secondment at the University of Auckland to develop the Careers Service's website.

Steve works Monday - Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Kirsten Roche

Kirsten is the Careers Consultant leading on internationalisation in the Service. She is an experienced Consultant who has worked in several Russell Group universities and has experience of working with students from a wide range of disciplines. Prior to working in Careers Services Kirsten worked in the third sector, HR and central government. She is also the Edinburgh Award Leader for the Edinburgh Award (Media). Kirsten works Monday to Thursday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Jennifer Steven

Jennifer is the Careers Consultant for the School of Social and Political Science and the School of Health in Social Science. Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh Careers Service Jennifer has worked in diverse Russell Group institutions advising a range of students and has also worked on a series of international projects including European Internships Fairs and events in Brussels and delivering careers events in China and Hong Kong. She is a music graduate with a PG Dip in Careers Guidance and Vocational Development. Jennifer works Monday to Friday and is based in the Main Library Building.

Rachel Taylor

Rachel is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Biological Sciences and Molecular, Genetic & Population Health Sciences. She is an English and Film and Media Studies graduate with a PG Dip in Careers Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education from the University of Warwick. Rachel previously worked in the Information Team before moving to the Careers Consultant Team. Rachel works Tuesday to Friday and is based at Murchison House, King's Buildings.

Rachel is currently on maternity leave.

Matt Vickers

Matt is the Careers Consultant for the School of Engineering and the School of Maths. After a degree in geography from Aberystwyth, Matt taught English in Eastern Europe for 18 months before returning to the UK. Working for the Careers Service of Bangor University as a projects officer led to a move to Edinburgh where Matt was a Careers Information Officer for eight years before moving into consultant work in 2006. Matt works Monday - Friday and is based at Murchison House, King’s Buildings.

Lyn Kane

Lyn is the link Careers Consultant for the School of History, Classics and Archaeology and the School of Economics.  She has an MSc in Career Guidance and a Joint Honours Degree in Maths and Psychology.  She joined the University of Edinburgh in 2019 and has over 10 year’s experience within Higher Education, helping students and graduates plan and manage their careers.  Her previous employment includes working within local authority employability projects, student recruitment and marketing.
