BHF Centre of Research Excellence
The BHF Centre of Research Excellence in Edinburgh is a five year award from the British Heart Foundation to foster excellence in cardiovascular research
The BHF Centre of Research Excellence builds on two previous BHF Centre Awards and will deliver a new vision of excellence in cardiovascular research in Edinburgh, fostering existing world leading strengths and integrating new strategic direction enabled by our evolving and unique campus environment. We will provide cohesion and critical specialist appointments, investment in clinical fellows and priming of research with strengthening of translation in the cardiovascular space. This will collectively nurture and further promote the identity and world leading position of one of the very best international centres for cardiovascular research. Our strategy aligns the University of Edinburgh’s strategic position with the strategic priorities of the BHF.
Our research is driven through 3 pillars of research excellence that focus on specific research questions central to their field of study with clear interconnectivities through methodologies, technologies and approaches across these areas:

- Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome as Drivers of Cardiovascular Disease
- Fibrosis and Calcification in Cardiovascular Disease
- Vascular Dysfunction: Blood Vessels, Vascular Disease and Vascular Dementia
Our pillars are closely aligned with 2 major cross-cutting themes:
Our overarching aims to improve human cardiovascular health through Research Translation into Improved Diagnosis, Risk Stratification and Novel Interventions. Each research area is led by an internationally visionary researcher, ensuring implementation of the research strategy with clear measurable outcomes.
