Cancer research at the University has received an £8 million boost from leading charity Cancer Research UK
The University’s Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre received the funding following a review of the charity’s UK Centres network of excellence.
Edinburgh was chosen by an international panel of experts as one of just 13 locations to secure funding.
Understanding disease
Research at the Centre has a particular focus on brain tumours, which have poor survival rates and limited treatment options.
The funding will enable scientists to understand brain tumours better and develop better therapies.
This award represents a critical investment in the research infrastructure at Edinburgh, equipping us with the key laboratory and clinical tools needed to advance the understanding and treatment of cancer for the benefit of people in Scotland and beyond.
New therapies
The investment will also enable scientists to build on their world class research in bowel, breast and ovarian cancers.
It will enable researchers to turn laboratory-based research into new treatments that can be tested in patients through clinical trials.
This funding will give our researchers in Edinburgh the resources needed to take new discoveries from the laboratory right through to patients. Working together to test new ideas and treatments, our cancer scientists and doctors hope to be able to help more people survive cancer in the future.
Training
A key part of the Centre’s funding will involve training the next generation of cancer researchers - including 15 PhD students - and ensuring that the brightest scientists are attracted and supported in their career.
The award builds on nearly £5m invested by Cancer Research UK last year on a range of research projects in Edinburgh.
