Sustainability in operations and estates
We're taking action on campus to make positive change through sustainable, evidence-based practices. We harness our operational impact to restore nature, achieve our net zero carbon targets, reduce waste and use resources responsibly. Explore the themes below to learn more.
Our progress
Our world-leading climate actions were recognised by the International Sustainable Campus Network 2022, which named the University as the winner of its ‘Whole Systems Approach’ award.
Removing carbon for staff and student flights
We're taking responsibility for unavoidable carbon emissions by direct sequestration.
Scored "A" for responsible investments
We received an overall score of A in an annual assessment by the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment.
Deploying on-site renewable energy
We also generated 113,549 kWh from solar photovoltaics.
Supply chains sustainability
The products and services we buy are estimated to produce more than half of our total carbon emissions.
Sustainable estates
We consider sustainability at every stage of our estate development, from planning and design through to everyday use of our buildings. Key areas include energy and waste.
Climate conscious travel
Travel is one of the top three sources of global greenhouse gas emissions. We take a 'climate conscious' approach to travel to reduce our emissions.
Responsible investment and sustainable finance
The approach we take to responsible investment is rooted in its focus on social and civic responsibility, and a vision to make the world a better place.
Restoring woodland and peatland
We’re taking responsibility for our unavoidable carbon emissions by direct sequestration through planting trees and restoring peatland. At the same time, we are improving biodiversity and working with communities.
Our wild campus
To address the global ecological crisis, we have pledged to protect wildlife and prevent nature loss by 2030. Find out more and help us to transform our campus into nature-rich havens.
Adapting our campus to climate change
We will become more climate-resilient, creating a sense of place on campuses and promoting well-being and biodiversity, as an integral part of the wider context of the city of Edinburgh.
Making a fairer world
There are three pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social. Some of the social aspects we are working on in our operations include modern slavery (or human trafficking), fair trade and community engagement.
Good Food
Our sustainable food practices are themed around sourcing; provision; practice; learning, teaching and research; and leadership and culture.
