Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Information about Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) service

In some circumstances, the quality of cryopreserved sperm may be below optimal and unable to be used for traditional IVF to rederive a transgenic line. If an IVF has failed due to low sperm motility and fertilization capacity CTC are able to use ICSI. This is a technically-demanding process, which involves using a piezo assisted drill to penetrate a tiny hole in the outer layer of the oocyte, and physically introducing a decapitated sperm head into the cytoplasm of the oocyte, thus achieving fertilization.

CTC’s responsibilities during process:

  • CTC will have already attempted IVF and have recommended ICSI as an alternate procedure to rederive/regenerate a transgenic line.
  • CTC will organise the purchase of donor and recipient mice for the service and will communicate with the researcher during all stages of the project.
