MSc by Research in Biomedical Sciences (Life Sciences)

Wai Kit Chan (2011/12)

Wai Kit found the research experience in different fields helped in his decision to pursue a PhD in developmental neuroscience.

What did you get out of the course?

Coming from a background of genetics and molecular biology, I had interests in several research areas. The unique course structure of having lab rotations and seminars exposed me to a wide range of research areas satisfied my need to explore different research areas.

The research experience in the different fields allowed more insight in each of the research areas that I am interested in such as cell communication and genetics & disease themes which I have undertook.

This helped in my decision to pursue a PhD with the research theme of developmental neuroscience.

What are you doing now?

I am furthering my studies in pursue of a PhD in Biomedical Science (Integrative Physiology) at the Centre of Integrative Physiology looking into role of heparan sulfate in brain development.

Where are you hoping to go next?

I see myself pursuing research in an academic setting where in addition to research, I am able to teach. Ultimately, I hope to lead my own research group as I enjoy solving problems and making discoveries as it gives me a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Knowing that my research would contribute to the existing body of knowledge also gives me a sense of achievement.
