Professor Sue Welburn appointed as new Executive Dean of the ZJU Institute

Professor Welburn's appointment was formally announced on 14th March 2017 at a ceremony at the International campus of Zhejiang University in Haining, China.

Sue’s first act as Executive Dean, following the ceremony, will be to deliver a lecture on ‘Challenges in Infectious Disease Control’ to ZJE students as part of the undergraduate course ‘Global Challenges’

Sue has worked at the University of Edinburgh since 2000. She graduated with a BSc from the University of the West of England in 1984, and gained a PhD at the University of Bristol in 1991, where she also started her academic career at the Tsetse Research Laboratories. Sue is Professor of Medical and Veterinary Molecular Epidemiology in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and is the Founding Director of the Global Health Academy.

Sue has held senior management positions at The University of Edinburgh, firstly as Assistant Principal for Global Health and subsequently Vice Principal for Global Access. Sue is also a Fellow of Royal Society of Medicine, the Royal Society of Biology and The Royal Society of Edinburgh.

In her academic career, Sue has pursued a strong commitment to research focusing on interventions for disease control in the Global South, with on-going projects in Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Zambia and Zanzibar. Sue also has a strong commitment to the career development of young scientists. She has supervised PhD and MSc research students from Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia, working on all aspects of Zoonotic disease management.

In recognition of her work on the development of research-led distance learning Master’s programmes, Sue was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal in 2011 by HRH The Princess Royal, Chancellor of The University of Edinburgh.

The ZJE Institute is a major collaboration between Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Zhejiang University. The collaboration aims to build on the existing strengths of both universities, to develop and deliver an innovative programme of undergraduate and postgraduate education, alongside a centre for research collaboration in Biomedical Sciences. The University of Edinburgh is one of several international partners developing joint projects with Zhejiang University at the new International Campus.

 

It is truly a great honour to be appointed as Executive Dean of the Zhejiang University - University of Edinburgh Institute. This is an exciting opportunity to develop this new strategic partnership for teaching and research between The University of Edinburgh and Zhejiang University- two research intensive, high ranking global higher education institutions at a brand new International Campus in Haining, China
