Impressive students complete MSc internships

The first cohort of students reading for a MSc degree by Research in Biomedical Sciences (3+1 programme with Zhejiang University) completed their studies in August.

The students undertook advanced laboratory research projects addressing biomedically relevant questions using cutting edge technologies, like tissue engineering, gene editing in vitro and vivo, stem cell development and differentiation, and computer modelling, in a range of experimental models, from Drosophilia and C. elegans to rodent models of human disease.

The quality of research produced by all 11 students was impressive: the external examiner stated that he would have been very pleased if a second year PhD student had accomplished as much as any one of these students had during their 40-week project internships. Four of the cohort are remaining at the University of Edinburgh to do PhDs and others are also going on to do PhDs at other institutions both in the UK and abroad.

This programme involves the students completing the Basic Sciences (Biomedical Sciences) undergraduate programme at Zhejiang University, one of the top 10 Universities in China, in three years rather than the normal four, before moving to University of Edinburgh to undertake their MSc in their fourth year. Professor Mayank Dutia, Centre for Integrative Physiology, is Director of the 1 year MSc by Research component of the programme.
