Dr Marc-André Martel

Our friend and colleague Dr Marc-André Martel died suddenly on 11 January 2014 at the age of just 34.

Marc-André came to Edinburgh in 2005 from his native Quebec to study for his PhD in the labs of Prof Giles Hardingham and Prof David Wyllie and subsequently, after his completion of this in 2009, as a post-doctoral researcher.

Marc-André was looking forward to beginning the next chapter of his very successful career with a move to Lilly UK at Erl Wood Manor in March 2014.

Marc-André’s approach to his research was straightforward - he simply set out to do the best he could achieve and was never satisfied to show his data until he had reached a robust conclusion.

This ensured that his work is held in the highest regard and will continue to ensure its impact. His publications stand as testament to his talents.

Marc-André’s untimely death has robbed his family of a much-loved son and brother, his many colleagues and friends of an individual with a tremendous easy-going nature and of good humour and the scientific community of a neuroscientist of exceptional promise.

We miss him deeply.

A webpage has been created where messages of condolence and memories of Marc-André can be posted. These will be collated and given to his family.
