Principal formally opens ZJE Institute
Edinburgh Principal Professor Peter Mathieson has officially opened a campus in China that will translate medical research into technologies to improve healthcare.
He joined staff and students at the Haining campus near Shanghai to mark the formal launch of the Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh (ZJE) Institute.
ZJE champions fresh approaches to teaching, ground-breaking research and the translation of new ideas into practical medical applications.
The Institute was winner of the China-Britain Business Award for Education Institutional Partnership of the Year 2018.
Research-led teaching
Students at the Institute benefit from a high staff-to-student ratio as well as input from a diverse group of lecturers.
This includes academics from Edinburgh, who take time out from their research in Scotland to teach in Zhejiang. They are part of an international community of researchers.
ZJE initially offered a four-year dual award undergraduate programme in Integrative Biomedical Sciences. The second phase of collaboration involves the recently established programmes of BSc Biomedical Informatics and Dual PhD Biomedical Sciences.
The degree programmes offer a curriculum reflecting the full breadth of biomedical science that includes infectious diseases, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology and reproductive biology.
Key challenges
Researchers are investigating global health challenges including diabetes and Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR). They are adopting novel interdisciplinary approaches to develop new technologies, such as point-of-care diagnostics.
The ZJE also intends to turn cutting-edge medical research into technologies that improve healthcare.
The Biomedical and Health Translational Research Centre, connected to ZJE, will benefit from a concentration of high-quality international students and staff.
It will be a pipeline for new technologies that provide healthcare solutions and lead to drug discoveries.
Excellent reputation
Zhejiang University is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions.
It is a member of the C9 League, the Yangtze Delta Universities Alliance and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and is ranked third in the country.
Researchers in the School of Basic Medical Sciences are leaders in biomedical research.
Their specialisms include oncology, medical molecular biology, stem cell and regenerative medicine, neuroscience and genomics.
Our activities are being raised to a new level to deliver a step-change in innovation for healthcare in China and around the world. ZJE offers a catalyst for international research partnerships in China as well as a launch pad for engagement with Scotland.
