Many Miles for Mary Runners visit dementia research labs
The Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences hosted a special group of athletes who are raising funds for the Australian Dementia Research Foundation and Alzheimer’s Research UK
Jamie Milne is a strength and conditioning coach in Australia. In the late 1990s Jamie’s Grandmother Mary passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, and so in 2009 Jamie started the ultra-endurance charitable awareness campaign ‘Many Miles for Mary’ (MMFM), to raise awareness of dementia and funds for Alzheimer’s research.
Now in its tenth year, a team of Many Miles for Mary runners will run 1400km over 14 days from Land’s End to John O’Groats. The MMFM 2018 team are aiming to raise $25,000 towards much needed research by the Australian Dementia Research Foundation and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
On the 9th day of their Journey, the MMFM team visited The University of Edinburgh's Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences to tour some of the dementia research laboratories and discuss some of the research taking place in Edinburgh. Mike Daniels (a postdoctoral researcher in Dr Barry McColl's lab) gave a tour of the UK Dementia Research Institute funded work into the neuroimmune mechanisms influencing brain injury, repair and disease. This was followed by tours from Prof Karen Horsburgh and Dr Jill Fowler whose research is funded by Alzheimers Research UK and Alzheimers Society.
It was a pleasure to host such an amazing group of people raising money for such a fantastic cause! Best of luck to the team on their remaining run through Scotland (hopefully they'll enjoy the slightly cooler weather after enduring the heatwave on their run through England!).
