The Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh (ZJE) Institute welcomed its first cohort of BSc Integrative Biomedical Sciences students in September 2016.
Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh (ZJE) Institute
The Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh Institute (ZJE) is a collaboration in the fields of Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Informatics between Zhejiang University of China and The University of Edinburgh.
The Universities have together established an international research institute at the International Campus of Zhejiang University in Haining, Zhejiang, that builds on the existing strengths of both, and aims to foster collaborations in teaching and research.
The newly built International Campus has state of the art learning and teaching facilities as well as student-centred support structures. In addition, it provides extensive sports and leisure opportunities, exceptional accommodation and a high-class catering service.
All students who graduate from ZJE are eligible for two degrees: A Bachelor of Science (Hons) from The University of Edinburgh and Bachelor of Science from Zhejiang University.
The Institute currently offers three programmes:
A key element of the first phase of the collaboration was the delivery of a four-year dual award UG programme in Integrative Biomedical Sciences. The second phase of collaboration involves the newly established programmes BSc Biomedical Informatics and Dual PhD Biomedical Sciences.
The programmes are delivered in English by academic staff from the Deanery of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Basic Medical Science, and staff from the ZJE Institute. These are unique programmes for both universities, with an innovative model for the development and delivery of collaborative teaching at an international level. Students at the Institute benefit from a high staff to student ratio and input from a large and varied teaching team.

The BSc Integrative Biomedical Sciences programme builds on the success of the current Deanery of Biomedical Sciences’ 3+1 Masters programme with Zhejiang University, and creates exciting future potential internationalisation opportunities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. For example, Career Development PhD Scholarships in the Deanery of Biomedical Sciences provide opportunities for recipients to contribute to teaching and learning activities at the ZJE Institute.
Zhejiang University is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. It is a member of the C9 League, the Yangtze Delta Universities Alliance and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and is ranked 3rd in the country. Researchers in the School of Basic Medical Sciences are leaders in basic and translational biomedical research, with specialisms in oncology, metabolic syndrome, neuroscience, medical molecular biology, stem cell and regenerative medicine, and genomics.
