Entrance requirements and application process for the iCM PhD programme.

iCM PhD programme – Information Sessions

1. Application Information:  Wednesday 22 November 2023, 2 - 3pm (GMT)

A member of the iCM Team will give a short presentation on the application procedure and answer any questions you may have.

2. Meet the current iCM PhD students: Thursday 23 November 2023, 12 - 1pm (GMT)

iCM students from different cohorts will talk briefly about their experience on the iCM Programme and answer questions about life on the programme.

 

Both information sessions will be online. Registration is essential, you can register for both sessions using the same Registration Form .

Individuals wanting to attend the sessions but are unable to due to time zone differences should still register and provide their time zone, if there is enough interest we will try to arrange another information session.

Entrance Requirements and eligibility

BSc or equivalent with first or upper second class honours in a relevant subject.   Applications are encouraged from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds who have studied a variety of subjects including Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Computational Data Sciences, Engineering, Genetics, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Physics.

iCM is open to applicants of all Nationalities. We aim for a diverse student cohort and applicants from members of groups underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a good knowledge of spoken and written English.

iCM PhD Programme applications

Applicants do not need to contact potential supervisors before submitting their application.  Candidates are given the opportunity to talk to potential iCM supervisors at the interview stage  and the projects on offer will be decided in August 2023. 

Application Procedure for entry in October 2024

To apply you need to:
  1. Complete the online application form (1) A PDF version of the application form is available here. This is for information only and applications in PDF format will not be accepted, the online form must be completed.
  2. Complete the anonymous demographic information form (2)
  3. Contact referees and send them the ‘Referee form’. Ensure they send in references by the closing date. Details for each form are given below.

Closing date for all applications is Monday 4th December 2023, 12 noon (GMT).  Applications submitted late or in the wrong format cannot be accepted. Only complete applications with a completed demographic information form (2) will be considered.

A. All applicants should give the names of two academic referees on their application form. 

Two academic, or equivalent, references are required. One reference should be from your academic tutor.  For the second reference, if you have done a research project, it is advisable to request the reference from the head of the research group. [We understand that COVID-19 may have limited opportunities for research placements and this will be taken into account].

B. Contact the referee: It is the applicant's responsibility to contact each of their referees and ask the referee to complete and submit the referee form below before the deadline.

The Referees should submit the completed referee forms by Monday 4th December 2023, 12 noon (GMT)

Note: When the online forms are submitted you will receive an automated message in your browser confirming submission. Form submission will not be confirmed by email.

 

Selection Procedure and Funding

This year there will be one intake of eight students. The recruitment committee will base its decision on the application documents and interviews. Interviews will take place on 17 and 18th January 2024. Candidates will be informed if interviews will be in person or online at a later date.

Candidates selected for interview will be informed by email by Wednesday 20th December, 16:00 (GMT).  If you have not heard from us by this date we regret that your application has not been successful. 

Successful candidates will receive a generous stipend at Wellcome rates and tuition fees at UK, EU or International rates for four years, relocation costs (up to £1,000), and Visa and IHS (International Health Surcharge) fees for overseas students will be reimbursed.

Current Wellcome stipend starts at £22,976 in Year 1, rising to £24,617 in Year 4. Funding for research costs, travel and training are also provided. After submitting their thesis, students have the opportunity to access the PhD Programme transition funding to support training or work experience that help launch the next stage of their career.
