Short-term visiting research students

We welcome applications from students registered at other Universities to the University of Edinburgh for a period of research, within the Graduate School of Biological Sciences.

 All visiting students to the University must be registered on the University’s student record system, unless the duration of the visit is less than two weeks.

Visiting Research Students (VRes)

If you are admitted to the University for up to twelve weeks you will not be charged a tuition fee.

If you are admitted for more than twelve weeks and up to and including twelve months you will be charged a flat fee rate which will be £610 in session 2016/17 (£650 in session 2017/18) unless you are part of an reciprocal exchange programme eg Erasmus.

How to apply

If you wish to come to our School as a visiting research student, please complete the application form below. You should make contact with our academic staff in your field and identify someone willing to supervise you before applying.

Students who require a visa must submit their formal application at least 8 weeks before the intended start date. You should note that only the Graduate School can issue offer of admission letters which may be used for Visa application purposes. All others must apply at least 6 weeks before. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee that applications will be processed in time.

If you are a non-EEA national, you will need to advise us on your application form what type of visa you will hold to come here. Please contact Edinburgh Global if you require any advice about visas.

Visiting students who will apply for a Tier 4 visa must meet standard College English Language entry requirements for postgraduate students (Please note: tests must be taken no more than two years before the planned admission date). Please see the link at the bottom of this page.
