Fees and funding

We offer Graduate School studentships to cover some or all of the costs of studying at Edinburgh. You may also fund your studies yourself, or find an external sponsor.

 

In the laboratory

Currently Available Funded Studentships

Our supervisors hold competitive funding for approximately 30 PhD studentships per year:

  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) (UK/some EU applicants eligible): Apply through us, following guidance for EASTBIO applications.
  • Medical Research Council (MRC) (UK/some EU applicants eligible): Apply here.
  • Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) (UK/some EU applicants eligible): Apply here.
  • Wellcome Trust 4 Year PhD Programme in Hosts, Pathogens & Global Health (All applicants eligible): Apply here.

Our advice is to apply early so that your prospective supervisor can consider you for all available scholarships; they and the staff in the Graduate School Office will be able to advise on applications, so please do contact us for help.

Applying for external funding

We encourage applications from students who plan to apply for external funding. We have current students funded by a variety of international government schemes. We will need you to follow our guidance on how to apply in order to make you the offer you will need for your funding application. We recommend you apply at least a month in advance of your funding application deadline.

We encourage applications from students who plan to fund themselves through their study. We will need you to follow our guidance on how to apply in order to make you an offer, but we welcome applications from you at any time of year.
