How to apply
A successful Graduate School application depends on a series of required steps.
Our main deadlines for applicants wishing to start a PhD in October 2018 have now passed, with the exception of those listed below:
- Wednesday 4 July 2018 EASTBIO NPIF Projects (now closed for applications)
-Friday 27 July 2018 EPSRC funded Projects
- Friday 13 April 2018 for DSTL PhD Project (now closed for applications)
- Friday 27 April 2018 for Novo Nordisk Foundation funded PhD Project (now closed for applications)
- Wednesday 2 May 2018 for PhD in Integrative Cell Mechanisms (now closed for applications)
- Saturday 21 July 2018 for ERC funded PhD Project in Evolutionary Genetics
Applicants with/applying for their own funding will be considered throughout the year.
For PhD applications, please read all the instructions below and follow them carefully.
If you are interested in a one year (MSc by Research) or two year (MPhil) research project, please follow just steps 1 and 2; your supervisor will then advise you on how to apply.
Step 1: Meet our entry requirements
We look for at least a 2.1 honours degree or its international equivalent in a relevant subject. Typically, candidates have a good understanding of the field they propose to study, and at least some research experience.
Non-UK candidates whose first language is not English will need to provide a certificate of proficiency in the English language in order to take up an offer of a place.
International Student Entry Requirements: we accept the standard entry requirements given on these pages
Step 2: Contact supervisor(s)
Carefully study the research profiles of our academic staff as well as our listing of available projects. Email the supervisor(s) you are interested in working with. You can identify a prospective supervisor by using the following links.
Please attach a single document which must include: a two page Curriculum Vitae including contact details for two academic referees; a one page statement of research interests. You may also raise any specific questions you have about their research area.
Step 3: Apply online
Make an online application to the appropriate PhD programme(s), just select October 2018 as your likely start date. Please note:
a - name the supervisors and projects you are interested in; you can list up to three. WE WILL NOT PROCESS APPLICATIONS THAT DO NOT NAME A SUPERVISOR AND PROJECT.
b - if you are applying to an advertised project(s), please just enter the supervisor name(s) and project title(s) in both the Research Topic and Research Project sections of the form.
c - Documents uploads:
- when asked for your research proposal, please upload the document sent to the supervisor at step 2. If you are applying to an EASTBIO project, please upload your CV + EASTBIO application form instead.
- please upload your official interim or final transcript/s and degree certificate/s when available.
d - References: please give two academic reference contact details (with an academic email address) and tick for the references to be automatically requested. If you are applying for an EASTBIO studentship, please let your referees know they should upload the EASTBIO reference form instead of the generic one requested by the online application system.
e - Funding information please indicate which potential scholarships/studentships you are applying for, there is no need to provide the address or amount of funding. More information can be found here but if you are unsure just put "School" and your proposed supervisor will consider you for the relevant competitions.
What happens after I apply?
We will contact you if we need any further information to be able to consider your application. Please regularly log in to your EUCLID account to check for any messages from us. If you are shortlisted for a PhD place, we will invite you for interview in person or for a skype/telephone interview if you cannot attend in person. Our initial set of interviews will be in January - February 2018. We do keep applications on hold while we allocate all our different funding, and so it is possible you will not have a firm decision from us until May 2018. If you wish to enquire about how to complete your application or the status of your application please contact us: firstname.lastname@example.org .
