Postgraduate Taught

MSc Synthetic Biology & Biotechnology

For those studying Synthetic Biology & Biotechnology.

Programme Director's Welcome

The MSc in Synthetic Biology & Biotechnology represents a unique opportunity to train in some of the newest and leading-edge areas in Biology. Synthetic biology tools provide a central enabling set of technologies ready to be used by the biotechnology and biomedical industries. By combining systems biology with engineering principles to design and build new biomolecular networks, synthetic biology, also referred to as "Engineering Biology", has become one of the ‘eight great technologies’ of the future, with goals ranging from engineering microbes for industrial waste bioremediation, to creating artificial cells.

Our MSc offers training that reflects the diversity of synthetic biology and biotechnology: from experimental lab work, to modelling of biological circuits, to the social implications of designed cells. Included within the MSc training is a three-month research project, which could be carried out in a University research laboratory or could be industry-based: either in the laboratory of an established company in the biotech industry (specialising in bioenergy, bioremediation, distilling, pharmaceuticals, etc.) or a 'start-up and spinout' (a young company seeking to develop novel ideas into innovative products and services).

We offer flexibility in the structure of the programme, allowing you to select courses to suit your background and areas of interest. The programme forms part of a suite of MSc programmes within the School offering multi-disciplinary opportunities and unparalleled course choice across many areas of biology.

The MSc programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge that are attractive to prospective employers in the rapidly expanding biotechnology industry, as well as providing thorough training for further research at PhD level and beyond

We look forward to meeting you in September.

Firbush field trip

As a student on the MSc in Synthetic Biology & Biotechnology, you may have the chance to take part in a field trip to the University’s residential outdoor activity centre, Firbush.

The trip incorporates a little serious study but plenty of time for relaxation and enjoyment too.  It is a great way to see some of the beautiful Scottish countryside and you can try out some outdoor activities such as cycling, hill walking or water sports.
